How can you give thanks is a meaningful way?
As you sit down to your Thanksgiving feast with your family and friends, your table covered with platters full of roasted turkey, homemade stuffing, and pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream, we hope that you’re mindful and grateful of everything that you have. Sometimes in our busy lives it’s too easy to overlook the things we have because we’re focused on the list of things we want, but that doesn’t change the fact that many of us are blessed with more money, more possessions, and more life security than people in other countries.
Most people often think that ‘giving thanks’ during the holiday season means reflecting on what you have and being more mindful of those benefits. But what many people don’t realize is that giving thanks can also be much more tangible and that there are actions you can take.
Rather than planning your Black Friday shopping spree, giving thanks by donating to programs like the University of Fondwa can change the course of people’s’ lives. We encourage you to think about being generous and thoughtful this holiday season while you spend your extra time with friends and family.
Why Donations to uFondwa are Important
While we might take for granted where our next meal comes from, how easy it is to go to the store and pick out the largest turkey, and how nice it is to have a day off, rural communities in Haiti don’t have the luxury of taking that sort of thing for granted. Hard work is ingrained in those communities; it’s a necessity. The rural people of Haiti need the education and intellectual independence that uFondwa is providing, equipping them to not only survive, but hopefully in the future to thrive.
Many Haitians don’t have the opportunity to attend higher education because colleges and universities are scarcely available in rural areas. In fact, the University of Fondwa is the only rural university in Haiti. The donations we receive fund scholarships to rural Haitians so they can learn the skills and knowledge to not only support their families, but also help to support their communities.
Donating is Easier than you Think
Believe it or not, most of our kind and generous donors are not millionaires who have piles of money lying around. Most of them are just like you—average, hard-working Americans who put in their hours, day in and day out. Making a financial gift to uFondwa that truly benefit others can be as simple as collecting a few dollars here and there.
Think about this: when you’re doing your Thanksgiving grocery shopping for your upcoming feast, your total order could easily come to $200 or more. What if you set aside $50 of that for something that would help change someone’s life for the better? Would you do it? In the long run, $50 might be something you can easily part with if you imagine all the good things that money will do for the rural communities of Haiti.
Bringing it Home
When you sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with your family, we hope you consider other families who might not have as much as you do and maybe even consider doing something to help them. All of the donations we receive directly benefit real men and women who want to change the course of their nation. You can be a part of that change.
Donate today, no matter how much or how little, from $5 to $500. We and all of future leaders of Haiti appreciate your generosity, your thoughtfulness, and your commitment to changing the future for the better.
